BASINGSTOKE ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY Meeting held on 23rd March 2006 at Cliddesden Primary School   Apologies Helen Mountstephens, John Murphy, Paul Moulton, Bryan Jenkins, Dave Worley.   Welcome The chairman, John Stapleton welcomed all those present and apologised for the extra furniture around the hall. This is due to ongoing works at the school.   What’s up? Dave Shave-Wall told us what we could expect to see in the night sky in April.   Messier Marathon John reminded members that the Messier Marathon is due to take place at the usual venue on 25th March. Should this prove unsuitable because of adverse weather conditions the event will take place on 1st April. He reminded members that they should dress appropriately with several layers of warm clothing and footwear. Although some food is being supplied, a flask of warm drink and some high-energy snacks such as chocolate or dried fruit will be needed.   Public Observing This is due to take place on 22nd April, and will take place whatever the weather. Access will be available to the hall and some members have made some display boards about different aspects of astronomy. Continuous video displays and displays on computers will be available for public viewing.   Main Item The chairman, John Stapleton gave a very interesting talk about Planetary Nebulae, and showed many examples of these complex and beautiful objects.   After coffee, members watched a video of the sky in Northern Hemisphere in spring and the Southern Hemisphere in autumn.
